Uccelliera Azienda Agricola Uccelilera sits above
the Aviary farmland has exited since the 11th century. Purchased
in 1986 when Andrea Cortonesi chose to transform the land
into a vineyard/wine cellar, this estate has continuously
produced greater and greater Tuscan wine. Here a high density
of vines covers just 6 hectares. Named for the hills for
which it lies on, Uccelliera is located in the Southeast
area of Montalcino. It is here that the primary focus of
Brunello has won the estate critical acclaim including the
Tre Bicchieri from Gambero Rosso, although several other
noteworthy wines are produced at this estate; the Super
Tuscan 'Rapace' (a blend of Sangiovese Grosso, Cabernet
Sauvignon, and Merlot) and the baby Brunello, Rosso di Montalcino.
Cortonesi is a firm believer in the minimal
use of wood when attempting to bring out a wine's true characteristics,
so it is no surprise that his Brunello di Montalcino is
so well-structured and balanced. He is also intent on showing
the true nature of the land when utilizing the Sangiovese
grape, as he is there for every single part of the production
process. Cortonesi has now taken the estate one step further
by producing and selling olive oil, grappa and honey.
