Nardi, Silvio In 1893 Francesco Nardi sought his fortune
in America, leaving his family at home on their farm. Within
two years he had developed an innovative design for a plow
that achieved great success and allowed him to return home
to Toscana and start his own business. Nardi Francesco e
Figli continued to present smart new ideas, helping to effectuate
the farming revolution that swept Italy in the early 20th
century.
With this forward-thinking background in agriculture, Francesco’s
son Silvio purchased the estate of Casale del Bosco in 1950
in the charming but obscure area of Montalcino. In 1958
he produced his first bottling of Brunello, and he was among
the first members of the newborn Consorzio del Vino Brunello.
The love of the land that he had seen in his father was
also ingrained in Silvio, whose practices in the vineyard
and cellar revealed a profound respect for nature and tradition
through discriminating use of the best technology.
Silvio’s daughter Emilia took control of the estate
in 1991, and with her siblings’ help she still runs
things just as her father did. Nardi now covers 80 hectares
in three different locations: the original vineyards surrounding
Casale del Bosco, the Manchiara estate, which in 1995 begot
their first “cru” Brunello, and Castello di
Bibbiano. As they progressively expand their line of bottlings,
the family is also planning to enhance the estate with a
scenic getaway where visitors can experience great Tuscan
wine and cuisine while enjoying the beautiful, peaceful
countryside. Nardi wines bear a distinct trademark of elegance,
longevity, and a lovely smooth texture that betray the estate’s
award-winning use of technology to express the character
of the land.
