Marchesi
di Barolo Marchesi di Barolo dates back to the
twelfth century, when the land-owning Falletti family of
Barolo was granted titles of nobility. Today the estate
owns approximately one hundred acres of vineyards in the
Langhe, including some of the finest in Barolo. Most Italian
wine experts hail the single-vineyard Barolo Cannubi DOCG
as the ultimate definition of a world-class Barolo. Marchesi
di Barolo owns a major portion of this famed vineyard and
its Barolo Cannubi is well known for its rich perfume, complexity
of flavor, and seductive smoothness that develop with aging.
The outstanding 1990 vintage allowed the Cantine to produce
what is probably one of the finest Barolos they have made
in the last twenty years: an impressive climax of discipline
in the vineyard and expertise in the cellar, the multi-dimensional,
complex 1990 Barolo Cannubi is a full-bodied, ultra-concentrated
and delineated wine with excellent purity and length. This
elegan, powerful wine undoubtedly has another ten years
of drinking enjoyment. Still striking in color, the rich
garnet hue camouflages its years of aging. Advancing in
aroma development, the wine displays scents of roses and
violets along with sour cherries. These ultra-ripe cherries
carry over to the palate, where they are accompanied by
raspberries, licorice, and spice. Brooding and bold in body,
the long finish displays the whole range of flavors enjoyed
on the palate.
Nebbiolo rarely thrives outside its native
Piedmontese habitat. The grape is highly sensitive to terrain
and is best accommodated in the Langhe's chalky, marly soil
of maritime origin. Producing majestic reds of phenomenal
depth, complexity, and longevity, nebbiolo is Piemonte's
earliest red variety to bud and the last to ripen. Its name
derives freom the early morning mists, or "nebbia,"
that shroud the lower slopes of the Langhe hillsides during
the fall harvest.
